About the region
Tállya settlement is situated at the Eastern part of the Borsod-Abauj-Zemplén County, located at the South-Western foot of the Zemplén hill at Tokaj-hegyalja.
Tokaj-hegyalja is the mostly known region of Hungary, bacame known world-wide for its famous viticulture and winiculture. The traditionally grown sorts of grapes are: furmint, lindenleaf and yellow muscutell. These mentioned vine sorts are used for making the world famous aszú wines /botrytis wines/ which are well known in all over the world.
In 1737, the Tokaj winegrowing area was the first to be delimited by royal decree. In this region, the vinification methods have been carefully regulated for almost three centuries.
The botrytis wines of this region has been known almost in the wholw world in the years 1700, as Ferenc Rákóczi the gouvernor of Hungary sent from this wine to the king of France Lewis the XIV, who characterized this wine with the following statement:
"VINUM REGUM, REX VINORUM" - "WINE OF KINGS AND KING OF WINES"
The success of Aszú has been still reinforced by a belief that spread rapidly in the medical circles from the XVIIth century onwards, according to which in reasonable quantities, Aszú wines would be good for health. Actually, since Aszú contains penicillin, it has been sold in drugstores for a long time, under the name: "VINUM TOKAJENSE PASSUM".
Since the knowledge of winegrowing dates back to many generations, and in order to preserve these old traditions, in 2002 UNESCO decided to declare the Tokaj wine region a world heritage site.
The region has unique geological and geographical assets: sunny, south-facing slopes, volcanic subsoil rich in minerals, a microclimate determined by the proximity of the Bodrog and Tisza rivers, as well as long autumns. The proliferation of the noble rot, «Botrytis cinerea», leads to the desiccation of the grapes (development of Aszú).
